Looking to keep my music collection current

I have got myself an ipod after all this time and i love it! i am in the process of getting all my cd's onto the computer and loaded onto the ipod. What i really want to do though is load some of my old tapes on to it, i am not actually sure this is possible but i am looking for advice from someone who knows. I tried searching on how to connect tape player to computer but it was not very clear to be honest so i was a little confused. I am reluctant also to pay anyone to do this as i am sure i could do it myself with the right instructions from someone who knows what they are doing. I have seen on the net old record players that connect via usb so i would assume that the same sort of tech exists for tape players, i would like to connect my own player up if possible rather than buying a new one but not sure if this is entirely possible.
